Home Sweet Home

Written by Amelia

My mister and I bought a house! A few weeks ago, I announced that the house hunt was on, and it didn’t take us long to find the right one. Here’s what it looks like now:

Here’s one option for a new exterior color palette:

Picture it with three more second floor window boxes in that awesome chartreuse color overflowing with beautiful live plants instead of the sad sickly ones currently there.

I used the color finder at Better Homes and Gardens  to “repaint” the exterior. Since I will be doing A LOT of actual painting in that house over the next few months, I thoroughly enjoyed virtually painting it because I could do it from the couch.

This is our first home, so we’d love any tips, advice, or tricks from seasoned homeowners even if your advice is, “Don’t paint your house in that hideous grey/pea green color palette!”

I hope that snow is fresh, because I’m ready for a snow day!

Congratulations!! How exciting, love the windows and flower boxes. I love the bright color on the door and flower boxes, I’m so boring I always want a stand out but always pick black, white, red, brown…… can you change the railing to the shutter color also? I like keeping the dormer different color also. Keep us updated to follow the progress.

Thanks, Carolyn! I definitely agree about the railing. If you look to the left, you can see that the house next door is bright orange. It’s kind of a funky/eclectic block, so I want to keep some bright colors, but that blue has to go!

Didn’t notice that…..the Painted Ladies Homes of Lancaster instead of San Francisco? I’ll be watching for the progress!

Ok this auto correct is really getting annoying. I mean ‘color’.

Thanks, Mary. Autocorrect is the WORST!

Mary, I love that autocorrect! I get a big chuckle every time!
Amelia, I cannot wait to see your personal imprint on that lovely structure. I am sure it will reflect your eclectic style. And won’t it be fun!

Although I don’t mind the periwinkle blue for that particular quaint and eclectic street.
Your color choices will definitely make your home stand out as both classy and fun!
I can’t wait to help you and see the transformations you’ve planned take place!!

Congratulations! Now that the paper-signing is done you can get on to the more fun stuff- the decorating!

Here are a few bits of wisdom after owning (and painting) 3 homes now:
    1) start early in the day!
    2) wear plastic gloves or use a little vaseline or bar soap under your fingernails for easy clean up.
    3) estimate paint needs and have the store mix it all at once- going back for “a final quart/gallon” often results in a slightly different shade that shows!
    4) painted stairs, stair risers and wood floors can be cool in old houses- colors/patterns on stairs can add just the right “pop” to a room and painted wood floors.
    5) a broccoli band/rubber band stretched from top to bottom around a paint can (stretching across the top of your paint can) makes a perfect “excess paint blotter” to wipe brushes against.

    Have fun!
